A body is a heavy thing.

Don’t get me wrong, one hundred and sixty pounds is the same weight whether it’s in bags of barley, a full keg, or a human being.

I took science like everyone else. Weight is weight.

It’s just that this isn’t something you plan to know. Plan to experience.

Hoisting her over my shoulder wasn’t an option. Too much contact. I’d seen enough TV.

I didn’t want to touch her more than I had to—good thing we all were wearing gloves.

No one thinks twice about where cardboard boxes come from. Where they go. As long as your recycling gets picked up each week like clockwork, you never stop to think about what happens to it, do you? You don’t. So, spare me your judgment for using the big screen TV box you didn’t think twice about tossing into the alley for someone else to deal with.

Technically, I did reuse it. One side got a little beat up along the asphalt. It’s not like you were going to keep it.

Enjoying that TV now?

I mean, it’s not like I started my week thinking, “Better pick up the groceries, reattach the gutters, and figure out how I’m going to handle a dead body.”

In a typical week, I like beer like the next person. Trail rides. Motorcycle magazines.

There’s what you set out to do with your time and what life hands off. I’ve learned that some weeks, it’s a leaky faucet, other times, it’s the body of someone you used to know.

Makes it easier to handle a body. The part where you used to know them. Only way it could be easier is if it was a stranger. Then again, if it was a stranger, I would have been less freaked about the whole thing. Less pressed to find a spot.

Location is everything, let me tell you.

I couldn’t leave her anywhere that would point fingers my way. That was my immediate thought.

Dragging could only be a short-distance option. A crowded place meant too many ideas to get away with much for long.

I had a tiny pocket of time to cover up. Being on the lookout was an unexpected thrill.

Then came the woman and the dog.

In another time, or maybe a year from now, she would have been my type. Taller, great biceps, and a no-nonsense wardrobe that said, “I work for a living.” Someone who looked earnest. Like your favorite horse.

That’s the kind of girl I want around. One who could be loyal, dedicated to the craft, and easy to have around the place. A cute dog is a bonus. A mascot.

She was looking for something. Her car, a grassy spot for the pooch, or the meaning of life, I don’t know. What I am sure of is that she had a lot going on in her head. You can tell that about people. When they are moving but aren’t responsive. There’s a vacant look in their eyes, and the only thing they see is the memories playing in the back of their mind. We’ve all had those moments.
